Biography
Massachusetts College of Art and Design – BFA in painting.
I enjoy painting portraits of people and their pets using an expressionistic style. I sometimes place objects in the painting representing something of the subject’s life. While I place objects in a painting intentionally, I leave it to the viewer to make of it what they will. Sometimes, the allusion is obvious, and sometimes not.
I begin with a sketch on the canvas and slowly build detail with color and shading. I am drawn to the work of Albrecht Durer, Vincent Van Gogh, Norman Rockwell, Ronald Searle, Zdzislaw Beksinski, Eben Haines, and Alice Neel. I especially enjoy experimenting with color and portraiture after the example of Lucian Freud.
I also enjoy experimenting with surrealistic subjects that are disjointed and dreamlike. I find the images I use as inspiration in literature, music, current events, and nature, especially human anatomy. Since I never really know where these ideas come from, I cannot explain them and thus leave it to the viewer.
I have done numerous commissions, and my work is in private collections in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and North Carolina.
